As storm season begins, now is the time to make sure we are all prepared for whatever the coming months may bring. While severe weather can affect everyone, older adults and homebound individuals often face additional challenges when storms threaten our communities.

At Meals on Wheels South Florida, we are committed not only to providing nutritious meals but also to helping our clients stay informed, connected, and prepared during emergencies.

Taking a few simple steps before a storm can make a significant difference. We encourage clients and caregivers to review emergency plans, keep important phone numbers readily available, and ensure they have enough food, water, medications, and essential supplies to last several days if travel or deliveries become temporarily disrupted.

Storm preparedness also includes staying informed. We encourage our clients to pay attention to local weather forecasts and emergency alerts and follow guidance from local officials regarding evacuations, shelters, or other safety measures. Having a battery-powered radio, a charged cell phone, and backup power sources can help you stay connected during power outages.

For Meals on Wheels South Florida’s clients, it is especially important to keep emergency meal supplies in a safe, easily accessible location. If your local Meals on Wheels program provides shelf-stable emergency meals, be sure to store them for use during severe weather events when regular meal deliveries may be impacted.

Family members, friends, neighbors, and caregivers can also play a vital role. Checking in on older adults before, during, and after a storm can help ensure they have the support and resources they need.

Storm season serves as an important reminder that preparedness is a shared responsibility. By planning and taking precautions now, we can reduce stress and improve safety when severe weather occurs.

Meals on Wheels South Florida remains dedicated to supporting our clients throughout the year by providing more than just meals. We encourage everyone to stay informed, stay prepared, and reach out if assistance or additional information is needed.

On Saturday, July 25th, we are partnering with Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) to provide three hundred hurricane prep kits to our clients to keep them prepared in the event of a storm. If you are a Meals on Wheels South Florida client and would like to receive a kit, please speak to your delivery volunteer or contact us at 954.714.6920.
