National Volunteer Month: Why Our Volunteers are the Heartbeat of April

There is a specific kind of magic that happens on a Tuesday morning in April. The sun is a little brighter, the breeze is a bit softer, and across our community, a dedicated group of neighbors is loading up their cars with more than just meals. They are packing up hope, conversation, and the promise that no one is forgotten.

As we step into National Volunteer Month, we find ourselves overwhelmed with gratitude. While April is the official time to "shine a light" on service, our volunteers at Meals on Wheels South Florida know that the need for connection doesn't follow a calendar. It happens every single day, one doorstep at a time.

The Power of a Knock

For many of the seniors we serve, the volunteer at the door is the only person they will see all day. Statistics show that nearly 90% of participants in home-delivered meals say Meals on Wheels helps them feel more secure and independent. But if you ask our clients, they’ll tell you about the person, not the percentage.

They’ll tell you about Toni, who knows exactly how Mr. & Mrs. Burdyl like their meals put away. They’ll tell you about Chris Ryan (pictured at left with MOWSOFLO team member Vickie Glinton), who always has a new travel adventure to share while he sets the meals down.

To our volunteers, this might feel like "just a delivery." But to a senior living alone, that knock on the door is a lifeline. It’s a safety check that ensures they are okay, a friendly face that combats the weight of isolation, and a reminder that their community still sees them.

Why We Need You More Than Ever

The reality is that as our population ages, the "waitlist" for meals grows. Across the

country, 1 in 3 local programs has a waiting list of seniors seeking help. We aren’t just looking for drivers; we are looking for connection-makers. Volunteering with Meals on Wheels South Florida fits into a lunch break, but its impact lasts a lifetime. Whether you can give one hour a week or one day a month, you are helping a neighbor age with the dignity and independence they deserve.

A Heartfelt Thank You

To our current volunteers: YOU are the wheels that keep us moving! You navigate the rain, the traffic, and the busy schedules to ensure our seniors are nourished in body and spirit. This month, we celebrate your selflessness, your smiles, and your stamina.

Ready to join the family? If you’ve been looking for a way to give back this National Volunteer Month, we have a seat (and a route) waiting for you. There is no better feeling than knowing you’ve made someone’s day a little brighter just by showing up.

Coming Soon: Volunteer Program Donation Options!

Later this month, you can ‘sponsor’ our volunteer program by supporting the important parts that keep our volunteer department’s wheels turning. Your gift will offset the cost of important items such as level 2 background checks, branded T-shirts, and delivery carts, ensuring our volunteers are safe on the roads.
