As temperatures climb during the summer months, older adults need to take extra precautions to stay safe. Extreme July heat can increase the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke, making even everyday activities more challenging.
At Meals on Wheels SFL, our mission goes beyond delivering nutritious meals. Our volunteers provide a friendly face, a wellness check, and peace of mind for many seniors who live independently. During periods of extreme heat, those visits become even more important, helping ensure that our neighbors are safe and have someone looking out for them.
Here are five simple ways to stay healthy and beat the heat this summer.
1. Drink Plenty of Water
Staying hydrated is one of the best ways to protect yourself from heat-related illness. Drink water regularly throughout the day, even if you don't feel thirsty. Avoid excessive amounts of caffeinated beverages, as they can contribute to dehydration. If your doctor has placed you on a fluid restriction, be sure to follow their guidance.
2. Stay Cool Indoors
Try to remain indoors during the hottest hours of the day, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you have air conditioning, please use it. If your home isn't air-conditioned, consider visiting a local library, senior center, or neighbor's house where you can cool off safely.
If you're a Meals on Wheels SFL participant, our volunteers are often among the first to notice if something doesn't seem right. A simple meal delivery can also provide reassurance that someone is checking in, especially during dangerous heat waves.
3. Dress Light and Protect Yourself
Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing to help your body stay cool. If you need to be outside, wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Whenever possible, choose morning or evening hours for outdoor activities, like watering plants or walking a dog, when temperatures are lower.
4. Know the Signs of Heat-Related Illness
Heat exhaustion and heat stroke can develop quickly. Watch for symptoms such as dizziness, headache, muscle cramps, nausea, confusion, weakness, rapid heartbeat, or excessive sweating. If symptoms become severe or someone loses consciousness, call 911 immediately. Acting quickly can save a life.
5. Stay Connected
One of the greatest protections during extreme heat is staying connected with others. Check in regularly with family, friends, or neighbors, and don't hesitate to ask for help if you need it.

Meals on Wheels SFL's volunteers do more than deliver meals-they build meaningful relationships with the seniors they serve. During periods of extreme weather, those regular visits can make a significant difference. Volunteers can recognize when someone may need additional assistance and help connect them with family members or emergency services if concerns arise.
We're Here for You!
