Each May, we recognize Arthritis Awareness Montha time to highlight one of the most common chronic conditions affecting millions of Americans. For many older adults, arthritis isn’t just a source of discomfort, it can make daily tasks like preparing meals, opening jars, or even completing house chores very difficult.

That’s where Meals on Wheels South Florida steps in, because we care so deeply about our senior clients and their overall health and well-being. We strive to provide referrals that may assist them with other health needs and rely upon our community partners to help bridge the gaps between healthcare services.

Many of our clients live with arthritis and rely on our daily meal deliveries not only for nutrition but also for support that helps them maintain independence. Our volunteers often provide more than one meal, they offer a helping hand, a check-in, and a moment of connection for those who may struggle with mobility and joint pain.

This month, we honor seniors living with arthritis and reaffirm our commitment to supporting them with dignity, compassion, and nourishment. Together, we can raise awareness and continue to provide the services that make a real difference in the lives of older adults in Broward County.

3 Foods to Help Alleviate

Arthritis Symptoms

1. Peppers: Peppers – no matter their color, are an abundant source of vitamin C, which preserves bone density , and may protect cartilage cells.  [1]

2. Soy: Try heart-healthy foods made with soybeans like tofu or edamame. Soybeans are also low in fat, high in protein and fiber and an all-around feel-good item. [2]

3. Healthy Cooking Oils: Extra virgin olive oil is loaded with heart-healthy fats as well as oleocanthal, which has properties similar to anti-inflammatory drugs. Avocado and safflower oils also have cholesterol-lowering properties and walnut oil has 10 times the omega-3s that olive oil has. [3]

You can support Broward County's older adults this month by making a gift to help provide nutritious meals to our senior neighbors.
